Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained

Chaos and creativity ran the classroom today…  I was so proud of my students as they worked together, shared their progress with each other, experimented and improved!  The grade 9 plan began with a rough idea, as described here: Art With Mrs. Rose.

After coming back from the long weekend, I wasn’t sure if my pupils would have thought about their projects, let alone worked on techniques.  I was wrong!  Some (not all) students had downloaded programs and apps over the weekend and had taken the time to explore the possibilities of stop-motion film making.  So cool.  What surprised me were the students who I hadn’t expected to warm up to the task… they were so involved! Backdrops and sets were put together, characters and props were put in place, and digital cameras, laptops & cell phones were put to good use as images were captured.

Groups of students were busy comparing their chosen apps & programs, checking the rate of shots taken, and learning from those who had explored more over the weekend.  Lesson for the teacher:  nothing ventured, nothing gained.  There have been few moments that could compare with the quality of learning and sharing in the grade 9 class today.  These films may not be perfect, but everyone will learn from this exploratory experience.  We’ll watch the films together at the end of the unit to celebrate & review any problems and make suggestions for next time, although I’ll never forget the value of trying this for the first time!

  1. So glad your students (and you!) had such good experiences trying stopmotion videos. Have you setup a “sandbox” site where they can share what they’ve made? You could use a posterous.com site for this if the videos are shorter and you want to email them… You can also directly upload them to a posterous blog and share them. Other alternatives are to setup a YouTube or Vimeo channel.

    I think it’s particularly significant that some of your students surprised you who you didn’t expect to follow through with more work on this over the weekend. A good sign… 🙂

      I’ve never heard of the sandbox site, but I’ll be checking it out right away! Is there a way to use it on the class blog site? …or maybe the Vimeo channel might work better on the site? Either way, I’m so glad that there are signs of true progress. Thanks again Wes, for being such a supportive coach!

  2. Thanks for sharing your experiences, and I am happy that you had students so engaged they were working on ideas outside of school. It takes time and patience to do stopmotion but there is something magical in bringing it all together, and to life. I agree with Wesley about having a Vimeo channel or something to share out the movies. That allows parents and families to see some of the work, and allows students to link to their movies (or download them) to online spaces they might inhabit out of school, making connections between your class and their lives.

      I think I’ll take your advice & use my brand new Vimeo account to share — an experience like this can’t be trapped in the classroom! I’m so happy for your resources though, Kevin. With such an experimental project, it was good to have some step-by-step guidance for the students, hints, and handouts for the kids to use as well. I can’t wait until the videos are done so that we can view them, but I’m enjoying the time until that point. 🙂
